Bernalillo County – After extensive review of over 70 proposals, in 2021 the Bernalillo County Arts Council and Bernalillo County Commission voted to select glass mosaic artist Gail Christofferson’s proposal for a new mural for the commission chambers of the county’s new flagship building, Bernalillo County @ Alvarado Square.
The mural will be a large-scale glass mosaic made up of nine unique panels. The mosaic titled “Silverado Skies” will be a brightly colored abstract design that captures the beauty of New Mexico’s skies and landscapes.
From April 24-29, the community of Bernalillo County can help create this beautiful work of art during four artist-led community mosaic sessions. The four sessions will take place in different parts of the county, making the project accessible to many members of the community.
“My community outreach plan and methods have proven successful and will provide the community with an opportunity to participate in the creation of this mural. I will organize events where the glass surface of the mural will be assembled by hand by members of the community,” says muralist Gail Christofferson.
Mosaic work sessions are suitable for people between the ages of 5 and 95. Attendees can expect to spend a few minutes working on the Silverado Skies Mosaic and can also enjoy other family-friendly activities at each location. Take-home art kits will be available at each take-home venue.
The Silverado Skies Mosaic event schedule is:
- Sunday, April 24 1-4 p.m.: South Valley Pride Day, West Side Community Center, 1250 Isleta Blvd SW, Albuquerque, NM 87105
- Wednesday April 27 5:30-7:30 p.m.: Whittier Elementary School, 1110 Quincy St SE, Albuquerque, NM 87108
- Thursday April 28 5:30-7 p.m.: Paradise Hills Senior Center, 6001 Paradise Blvd NW, Albuquerque NM 87114
- Friday April 29 5:30-7:30 p.m.: Deputy James McGrane East Area Command Center Sheriff’s Substation, 48 Public School Road Tijeras, NM 87059
Once the mural is complete and installed, the public will be invited to join the county in celebrating the new mural at a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The Silverado Skies Groundbreaking Ceremony will be Friday, May 6 at 4:30 p.m. at Bernalillo County @ Alvarado Square, 415 Silver Avenue SW 87105.
