BernCo Seeks Nominations for Brownfield Assessments

Bernalillo County – Landowners, businesses and local citizens are being asked to nominate potential brownfields in unincorporated areas of the county that could qualify to be turned from liabilities to community assets with a $600,000 grant awarded by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). A brownfield is a property where development, expansion or reuse may be complicated by the presence, or potential presence, of a hazardous substance, pollutant or contaminant.

To facilitate this EPA Brownfields Assessment Program, the county has launched a new website designed to educate the public about the program and stimulate community revitalization. The website is also where landowners or citizens can begin the process of applying to have a site considered for an Environmental Site Assessment.

“The goal is to transform degraded areas into thriving neighborhoods by helping to remove barriers to redevelopment,” said Bernalillo County Director of Economic Development Mayling Armijo. “This grant will help address unknown site conditions and create ready-to-use sites, while protecting public health and the environment. We are now at the stage where we need to hear from the public about potential sites. »

The county formed a coalition with the Rio Grande Community Economic Development Corporation and the Partnership for Community Action to establish a program to engage the community and create an inventory of sites. The EPA grant, administered by the county with the assistance of a team of environmental consultants led by Stantec, will be used to inventory and prioritize brownfields for redevelopment, assess existing site conditions, and plan for cleanup and reuse.

The grant will be used to initially appraise selected properties in unincorporated Bernalillo County, and if funding is available, other locations in Bernalillo County may be considered, including within the city limits of Bernalillo. Albuquerque. Information including fact sheets, a site assessment guide, brownfield examples, FAQs and a site nomination form are available at: https://www.bernco.gov /economic-development/brownfields-program/.
