Drew Sample open to stepping in for Bengals against Rams if CJ Uzomah is out with injury

As the Cincinnati Bengals prepare to leave for Los Angeles this week, all eyes are on one name on the injury report.

A sprain of the MCL in the AFC Championship game against the Kansas City Chiefs has a tight end CJ Uzomah’the status of superbowl LVI uncertain.

Uzomah, a vocal leader and a good man for big plays in big games, is doing everything he can to get back on the court, but there are still big question marks surrounding his availability.

While his leadership and motivation are there regardless, much has been done to replace his impact on the pitch. Climb against the vaunted Los Angeles Rams pass rush, tight ends can be crucial. Look for this piece to be heavily involved in the slowdown plan Von Miller coming out of the edge.

In the event that Uzomah cannot adapt, much more responsibility will be placed on the former second round drawn sample.

Sample has had little impact on the passing offense this season, recording 11 catches for 81 yards and no touchdown receptions.

Regardless of his modest stats, Sample appears to be ready to step up when his number is called and assigns his prep in a recent maintenance to bengals.com.

“You prepare every week like you play every snap and (tight ends coach James Casey) does a great job of making sure everyone is ready. It was no different than a normal game. Just maybe a little more tired, out there (with less) rotations, things like that,” Sample said.

Sample continues to echo the “next man” sentiment and says he might have been a little more tired with more shots, but it was “no different from a normal game”.

As Frank Pollack and the offensive line room prepare for arguably the best defensive line they’ve faced all season, Sample will likely be tasked with blocking assignments against some of the league’s best.

Anyone supporting the Bengals hopes Uzomah will be able to play and make an impact, but it’s great to see Sample locked in and ready to fill the void, if needed.
