Facebook will allow any WordPress blog to post instant articles

Facebook’s fast-loading instant articles have slowly rolled out, but on April 12, every publisher will be able to create articles using the special format. Facebook now makes it even easier for small WordPress blogs to deliver their content in instant articles. The social media giant worked with a small number of WordPress and Automattic (WordPress’ parent company) users to test a new plugin that creates instant posts.

Automattic plans to release the plugin as a free option for all WordPress users in time for the larger Instant Articles launch in April. WordPress users who use standard WordPress templates will be able to activate the plugin immediately to create instant articles, but more custom WordPress blogs may need to extend the plugin to support additional functionality. Automattic makes the plugin open source, so that the WordPress developer community can contribute and improve it.

“The plugin is open source, and we encourage the community to participate in its development to help publishers of all types take full advantage of the native and fast instant article experience,” a Facebook spokesperson said. “We will continue to iterate the plugin over the next few weeks and look forward to working with the WordPress community to improve the experience.”
