Introducing the new website for “Undaunted” and waiting for “Under the Banner of Heaven”

Oliver Cowdery running, in a scene from the 2021 Interpreter Foundation film “Witnesses” which is also used in 2022’s “Undaunted.” (This photograph appears here courtesy of gaffer Rhett Fernsten.) Please note the authentic early 19th century camera-equipped drone in the upper left corner of the photo.

I want to draw your attention to the newly revamped website for our upcoming two-part docudrama, which will be available on DVD in just one month, May 24, 2022:

Unwavering: Witnesses to the Book of Mormon

On the website, you can watch the one-minute trailer for the docudrama. You’ll also be able to watch our short videos — our “reels,” as we call them — as they appear each week. Our first, which focuses on Oliver Cowdery, is already on the site and available for your viewing free of charge. (There will be no charge for any rollers”. We encourage you to share them as widely as possible.)

In an article I posted here last week (“Light in the Public Square”), I suggested that Latter-day Saints should consider the upcoming FX/Hulu miniseries. Under the banner of heaven as providing us with the opportunity to engage in conversations with non-members of the Church about our real history and our real doctrines. I have suggested that faithful Latter-day Saints should, if they can, be prepare for such conversations, which may take place at unpredictable times over the water cooler, on the sidelines of a baseball game, in the office, with a patient or client, with a curious neighbor, with a puzzled parent , or in one of many other situations.

Here is a trio of items that I think can be very useful. There are no doubt many more, but these offer some good information:

“13 Things You Should Know About FX’s ‘Under the Banner of Heaven’: ‘Under the Banner of Heaven’ is a true crime thriller based on a book by Jon Krakauer with a controversial story.”

“Under the Banner of Old Tropes: With the upcoming FX/Hulu series portraying The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as a dangerous breeding ground for violence, it’s worth reflecting on the long history of similar efforts”

““Under the Sky Banner” Redux”

Do not be shy. If an opportunity arises, join us and contribute to a conversation. If you hear the Church degrading or if you see it attacked or denigrated, intervene to correct the account. Not with taunts or anger, but with calm reason and good information. If things go really badly, of course, turn away. Those who want to be ugly will be ugly. If we turn the other cheek, maybe they will end up regretting the ugliness. And that too can provide a valuable teaching moment.
