Sunday Night Sample – Drake – Poundcake

“Pound Cake / Paris Morton Music 2” appeared on Drake’s 2013 album Nothing was the same and stars Jay Z. The track was produced by Boi-1da, frequent collaborator of Drake and Jordan Evans.

The estate of jazz musician Jimmy Smith filed a lawsuit because Drake’s track used a 35-second sample of his 1982 song “Jimmy Smith Rap”.

Drake sort of won the case, when the New York District Court ruled that Drake’s use of Smith’s sample was fair use, as his version slightly altered Smith’s original statement and “adds something new”. “Jazz is the only real music that will last. All that other bullshit is here today and gone tomorrow. But jazz was, is, and always will be, ”Smith said in the original song. Drake modified the sample for the track so that it states “Only real music will last.” All that other bullshit is here today and gone tomorrow.

The song highlights Jay-Z. The funny thing is that the song almost ended up on the sidelines of the Magna Carta … Holy Grail list of tracks.

Drake revealed that he had heard Jay’s lines while working with Beyoncé.

“I had the nerve to ask Jay if I could not only get this song from him,” Drake recalls, “but if I could get the acappella because I had an idea for it. He got me. sent both acappella worms – he told me, I never do that.

Soon after, Noah “40” Shebib concocted a beat that Drake said was good, but a little too nostalgic. “I was like, it’s like a cut Foxy Brown album… too Ill Na Na,” he joked, referring to Foxy’s debut LP.

Boi-1da cracked the code with what would become the final instrumental.

“The rhythm brought Jay’s verses to life,” Drake says. “I sent the song back to Jay, and that’s when it almost became a Jay-Z song. But he’s such a great guy, he said, “I gave you my word.” I don’t know what I would do without this guy sometimes, he’s just full of gems and advice.

Drake adds that he’s proud of his collaborations with Hov, from “Pound Cake” to “Light Up” by Thank Me Later. But there is one he would have done differently.

“I wasn’t supposed to be on that hook [of ‘Off That’]”Drake says of the album cut that snubs the trends of The Blueprint 3.” I wrote it as a reference and it ended up doing the album. If I had been on that hook, I “probably would have said different things. At that point, who’s going to say no? I was just grateful to be on the album.”

Wu-Tang Clan’s “CREAM” is also sampled on “Pound Cake”, where the chorus is chopped throughout the song.

The song also includes Timbaland’s vocals on the chorus, and believe it or not, Ellie Goulding from her song “Don’t Say a Word”.

Hopefully we get an official collaboration from the two on Drake’s next new album (which would be finished and ready for release…)

Ellie says – ‘We’re talking! He discovered my voice on his last album, he sampled it, and I think he became a fan because of that. So who knows, something could happen.
